So the irony of this weekend turned out to be the weather, and our refusal to cooperate with it. Because of the aforementioned run in with the 8 million mile train, and me missing my doctor's appointment and being delayed in getting home, Kyle and I decided to postpone our long-awaited trip to the Oregon coast for today.
Unfortunately, we weren't graced with yesterday's beautiful weather two days in a row. To make this point visually, here's the view of the beach that we enjoyed from Ecola State Park, while eating homemade sandwiches for lunch:
As you can see, it was less than ideal. However, we did start reading Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose, which is a book I've been meaning to get started on since we moved here. It's the story of Lewis and Clark and their expedition West. Three chapters in, and so far it's pretty great. I also began to feel a little less bitter about the rain when I thought about experiencing it from the interior of a dry car, and not while wandering the uncivilized frontier. So, in the spirit of Lewis and Clark, and all of those native Pacific Northwesters I'm trying to emulate, I enjoyed the beach in the pouring rain...without an umbrella. (Those, my friends, are for east coasters only. Where on the east coast could you visit a store called "Rain or Shine" and NOT find an umbrella for sale?!)
I must confess, Henry Weinhard's Hefeweizen doesn't make things any worse, either. (Disclaimer: driver only consumed half of one. Promise.)
