Celebrating the Holidays...with a little 13% Ale

Kyle, in his diligent efforts to make sure we're in the Portland "know," is great about keeping up with the local events. Thankfully for both of us, he found out that the Portland Holiday Ale Festival started this past week and ran through today. How could we pass such an event up?
Clearly, this would not be in the realm of possibility. So, Thursday evening we dined on light fare at home post-work (aka, nuked leftovers) and decided to head out for a real meal - a few mugs of some hefty, spicy, Oregon-brewed holiday ale.

My only concern, considering the unusually nippy outdoor temperature, was whether we'd find ourselves standing in a parking lot somewhere freezing our you know whats off (thus subtracting from the soul-warming experience of a lovely holiday ale). Kyle assured me this would not be the case, and sure enough, we arrived at Pioneer Square to find what I can only describe as a fully tented (and Christmas-lighted) tiny village. Perfect!

We arrived about 6:30pm - prime Thirsty Thursday happy-hour (in New York, at least!) - and found a healthy crowd of imbibers. One of the advantages of Kyle's extraordinary height is that he's able to achieve above-the-clouds (or should I say crowds) shots such as these:

The festival was a great collection of local Oregon brewers sampling, in many cases, ales only available at the holiday festival. The names were clever:

Do you think I'm happy with my Brewdolph?

Speaking of things related to Santa's sleigh...Santa himself made an appearance at the festival! He was incognito that night, though...Dad, you always made sure I knew Santa was real, but you never told me he drank beer?!

Finally, would the ale festival really be complete without a little double-fisting action? I think not.
For all of our East coast friends feeling a little left out..perhaps leaving you with this final tidbit will make you feel better: The very first brewery in America was built in 1642 in none other than....yes, that's right....Hoboken, New Jersey. Cheers!

That looks fun! And certainly warmer than the NINETEEN DEGREES we've got here in the city.

I love the pic of Santa. He's my hero. Especially a beer drinking one.
